1. The Ritz, Mayfair

This Mayfair institution is well-known for being one of the world's most famous dining establishments. While it is most renowned for its afternoon teas, every meal here becomes an occasion due to the magnificent dining area, which is filled with waiters swooping around in full morning suit pushing dazzling silver trolleys. The menu, which is overseen by chief chef John Williams MBE, focuses on elegant French dishes produced with the best local British ingredients, such as tournedos of beef Perigourdine. The restaurant soared 40 places up the list from last year, and in addition to receiving the fourth slot, they also received the service award, while head chef Spencer

2. Ynyshir, Wales

Ynyshir (pronounced inis-heer) may appear an unexpected choice for the top slot, hidden away among the woods in rural mid-Wales; after all, it came 15th on the list last year. The prize, however, is a tribute to chef-patron Gareth Ward, who took over in 2013 and has since transformed the Victorian country house hotel into one of the UK's most sought-after destination restaurants. A meal here is not for the faint of heart, with its daring take on 'immersive' dining - each £350-a-head menu may extend to 30 dishes and normally takes between four and five hours to complete. However, it is their superb ingredient-led small meals cooked over fire that earned them a second Michelin star earlier this year.

3. The Ledbury, Notting Hill

The Ledbury reopened in March after a two-year suspension due to the pandemic. The team led by celebrated chef and co-owner Brett Graham certainly put the last couple of years to good use, reopening with a new sense of direction and purpose, with a redesigned dining room - all mirrors and marble with softly sparkling lights - and an even stronger concentration on top quality ingredients.

4. Moor Hall, Lancashire

This Lancashire institution was named England's best restaurant, dropping from first place, which it had held for the previous two years. The restaurant with rooms is housed in a Grade II-listed 13th-century building with five acres of gardens and its own lake, and is led by chef Mark Birchall, who previously directed the cooking at the highly acclaimed L'Enclume in Cumbria. The elegant tasting menu, available in four or eight courses, is mostly produce-driven, drawing inspiration from the neighboring Lancashire countryside. They source as much as possible locally, with charcuterie created in-house and honey harvested from the five beehives scattered across the idyllic grounds.

5. Brat, Shoreditch

This perennially famous Shoreditch eatery is hailed as London's best restaurant, and locals and out-of-towners alike flock here for the famed fish and meat dishes grilled on their wood fire grill. The wood-panelled décor of this former strip club on Redchurch Street is undeniably chic, with a smart east London crowd to match. However, the focus here is clearly on the cuisine. Begin with blackened grilled bread topped with anchovies and smoked cod's roe, then move on to pleasingly charred slices of meat and the indisputable star of the show, the turbot (for which the term 'Brat' is claimed to be a nickname). If you just order one product from here, make it this.

6. BiBi, Mayfair

BiBi, a sophisticated Indian restaurant, had the highest new entry at number five and won Opening of the Year, solidifying its reputation as one of London's finest Indian restaurants. Chef Chet Sharma's subversive take on excellent Indian cuisine is served at the latest Mayfair location from hospitality hitmakers JKS - the team behind Gymkhana and Hoppers.

7. A Wong, Pimlico

Chef Andrew Wong's eponymous restaurant pays homage to China's 2,000-year culinary history, serving up delectable plates of dim sum as well as dishes like seabass with fermented tofu sauce, wok-seared wagyu beef, and crab claw with cured scallop, all designed for sharing.

8. Core by Clare Smyth, Notting Hill

Clare Smyth MBE is a rare appearance by a female chef, but she is no ordinary cook: she is the first and only British female chef to have three Michelin stars in the UK, and just the fourth British chef in history. This is her first solo business (she also owns a restaurant in Kensington).
